Everything you need to know about wireless charging

November 30, 2024 Wireless Convenience

Wireless charging for smartphones and other gadgets is becoming more and more popular, but it’s been around for a few years already. Xtorm was one of the first to explore the possibilities of wireless charging and continues to make wireless chargers and Power Banks designed to make your life easier.

What is wireless charging?

Wireless charging is a technology that allows you to charge a device without connecting a cable to it. You simply place the device on the charger and charging begins automatically. However, in many cases it is necessary to attach a charging cable to the charger itself, as it needs power. Almost all smartphones and gadgets that support wireless charging use the Qi standard. By the end of 2023, the first products with the Qi2 standard will be released; a new version of the Qi standard. This technology will be based on Apple MagSafe.

What is MagSafe?

MagSafe is a technology from Apple that allows you to magnetically connect chargers to an iPhone. Currently, only the iPhone 12, iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 have MagSafe. This technology often goes hand in hand with wireless charging. Xtorm’s FS5W101 Power Bank is an example of a charger that snaps onto the back of your iPhone 12, 13 or 14 through its magnets and charges it wirelessly.

What are the benefits of wireless charging?

Charging cables often look messy, or they disappear behind furniture the moment you need them. With wireless charging, there is no need to connect your smartphone to a charging cable. So it’s the perfect solution in places like your desk or nightstand. It keeps your home tidy and with Xtorm’s products, it also looks stylish.

Wireless charging is also a great solution if you’re at a restaurant or airport, because you don’t have to bring your own power adapter and cable or use the (often) damaged cables from a charging station. Wireless charging is much easier and safer.

Which devices support wireless charging?

More and more phone manufacturers are including the technology wireless charging in their phones. Samsung, Huawei, LG and Sony, among others, sell wireless charging smartphones. Apple also joined the game a few years ago – all iPhones since the iPhone 8 support wireless charging. This has raised the popularity of wireless charging even more. Other gadgets such as smartwatches and charging cases for wireless earbuds also support wireless charging.

Can I charge my phone wirelessly when it’s in a phone case?

Xtorm Wireless Chargers can charge through phone cases up to 3mm. However, it is important to note that a metal case prevents wireless charging. It has a negative effect on the charging process because Qi wireless charging works through a system of magnetic induction coils.

Does the wireless charger get hot?

All chargers and adapters generate some heat when in use – and that includes wireless chargers. Xtorm chargers are thoroughly tested to ensure they are safe to use. They contain safety chips that prevent overcharging and overheating.
